For you, which model has defined generative AI the most?

  • the first llama coming out of nowhere
  • the usability of mistral 7b
  • the ubiquity of llama3
  • the impact of Qwen2.5
  • the smolness of SmolLM2
  • an other model

It would be cool to discuss these models, and why they're important to folk looking back.

For impact, it's either llama-2 or qwen-2.5, those were groundbreaking
BUT the most influential model is gpt-3.5-turbo, without a doubt.

The initial llama leak is what kicked everything off for regular people. It set the tone and really shoved OpenAI's "too dangerous to release" cover right back up where it came from.

That's a cool take. Yeah it was certainly more radical than other projects.

@aldigobbler Why do you think llama 2 was more impactful than llama 3

As a model? Or because of its usage in ChatGPT?

both, i feel like it blew up the discussion around instruct models

That's true. Llama 2 definitely exposed the options for instruction models to most community builders.
